During a 2-year study in 1994 and 1995, the effect of crop density on yield and some grain traits in three NS maize hybrids, was studied. The experiment was conducted on the alluvial smonitza type of soil of the Cacak valley. In all the hybrids, higher crop density led to visibly shorter ears with much smaller grains. The ear length and 1000 kernel weight were the lowest at the highest crop density, and test weight at the lowest one .The highest average biennial yield was obtained at the highest crop density.
