The oxidation of methanal on platinum coatings on titanium in acidic media

Abstract

 A platinum coating was thermally obtained on an adequately prepared titanium substrate. As determined by x-ray investigations, the coating contained 10-60 nm microcrystals of pure metal platinum. The electrochemical oxidation of methanal on the platinum coating took place following the dual path mechanism. Methanal was directly oxidized to CO2 and H2O. Parallel reactions of formation of strongly adsorbed –COad species blocking the platinum surface thus preventing direct methanal oxidation were performed. The mechanism of the –COad poisoning species formation in the hydrogen region was different from the one in the double-layer region.
